Happy Meal Every Time

Happy Meal Every Time

August 14, 2022

When you think of major franchises like McDonalds you think about consistency and uniformity with the products and the process. But a high school graduate Daniel Marshall has been adding some unique service at the drive through McDonalds in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Daniel is autistic but it hasn’t slowed him down or prevented him from sharing his genius with the world through music and positivity. Each order comes with a fun melody and musical message serving up free smiles with every order.
He always personalizes his tunes if he knows a customer’s name, or he will just give you a nickname like “Superstar”, “Boss”, or “Captain” or even sings the order back to the customer.
The owner recognized Daniel’s effervescent personality by surprising him with a personal message on the restaurant’s massive sign out front.
“WE ARE LOVING DANIEL!!!!,” read the sign, preceded by Daniel’s signature greeting and McDonalds jingle, “BA, DA, BA, DA, DA.”
Daniel’s cheerful singing and joking with customers at the Arden Hills McDonald’s near Minneapolis, Minnesota has earned him five-star reviews like, “Best Drive Thru Ever!”. Even if you don’t eat fast food you would want to just visit this drive through.
His outgoing personality and eagerness to spread happiness with every order is nothing short of brilliant. We can all learn from Daniel.

Cancer Stricken and Missing A Leg

Cancer Stricken and Missing A Leg

August 08, 2022

Earlier this year a six-year-old named Gus was diagnosed with cancer and had to have his leg removed.  It’s a tragic beginning to a heartwarming story.  Gus was a very active six-year-old until one day while being attended to it was discovered that he had a tumor on his leg and the only option was to have it amputated.  After the surgery Gus defied the odds essentially living the life like any six-year-old Goldendoodle.  But what makes this story extraordinary is what Gus did just a few months after surgery.  Gus lives in Minnesota and was walking along the riverbanks of the St. Croix River with his owners when he noticed something in the water that seemed to be in distress.  He jumped into the water to save whatever it was.  It turns out it was a baby otter, probably only a few days old.  Gus didn’t hesitate despite being down a leg when he jumped in and swam to the rescue.  After rescuing the baby otter Gus’ family got the otter to a wildlife rehabilitation center where they tended to the otter, and he survived the harrowing event.

Thanks to the three-legged dog Gus.

Chemicals That Make You Happy and How to Harness Them

Chemicals That Make You Happy and How to Harness Them

Chemicals That Make You Happy and How to Harness Them

Most of us have probably heard of chemicals like dopamine and endorphins. But, did you know there are a few more that most have not heard of?  Did you also know that there are ways you can increase more of them?  Naturally? Sometimes without any consumption of anything?   Well, the answer is yes.  We aren’t going to bore you with the science, but we want to give you some of the chemicals that we produce as humans and how to increase them on a daily basis.

  1. Dopamine.  We all have a “reward system” in our bodies and Dopamine plays a big role. Dopamine is known as the “feel-good” hormone. It gives you a sense of pleasure. It also gives you the motivation to do something when you're feeling pleasure. Dopamine is released in many ways.  But the simplest things trigger dopamine.  Not necessarily a dopamine “rush” that you may have heard of but a steady release.  Here is a short list of things that you can do to get a little extra dopamine.  A) Smile even when you don't feel like it.  Science has shown that just smiling releases chemicals like dopamine.  B) Get outside even in the hot or cold weather.  Science also proves that just breathing fresh air and getting outside releases dopamine.  C) Exercise regularly.  When you exercise your body releases dopamine.  Rigorous exercise can cause the dopamine rush that you may have heard of, but we recommend staying consistent rather than pushing it too hard.
  2. Anandamide.  Known as the bliss molecule, anandamide is a neurotransmitter that binds to cannabinoid receptors in the brain and body, stimulating a sense of happiness and mental wellness. Anandamide is known as the “bliss molecule” for the role it plays in producing feelings of happiness. It hasn’t been studied as much due to the fact that the endocannabinoid system wasn’t discovered until the early eighties.  There are many ways to increase this bliss molecule, but the one that is getting the most attention is through the consumption of CBD or THC.  We suggest trying CBD first.  It doesn't have the psychoactive effects of THC but will still upregulate anandamide.
  3. Oxytocin. Often called the “love hormone” it plays a key role at early stages in life.  When a mother nurtures her child science shows an increase in oxytocin in the child.  Produced in the hypothalamus gland, Oxytocin can be released by simple things such as affectionate touching.  Things as simple as hugging, cuddling and making love all increase oxytocin.
  4. Serotonin.  Serotonin is probably the most studied chemical in the body as it relates to happiness.  There are many serotonin prescription drugs designed to cause the body to upregulate serotonin.  We aren’t a fan of these drugs due to the side effects, but many of them are effective.  There are voluminous studies about one's diet and release of serotonin.  There isn’t one diet that fits all.  But, to make it simpler there are things you should not consume.  Try to reduce your sugar intake.  Science shows that what may seem like happiness when consuming sugar, it's actually the opposite.  You crash and you feel worse than you did before.  Reduce or eliminate alcohol altogether.  Many people feel “happy” when consuming alcohol but similar to sugar, you crash.  Alcohol is actually a depressant and exacerbates anxiety and depression.

While this is certainly not exhaustive, we hope that this information helps you with your Wicked Happiness.

Happier As You Get Older?

Happier As You Get Older?

July 24, 2022

Is anyone happy about aging? With aging comes wear and tear on the body. Our eyesight seems to get worse. We have less energy. Women go through menopause, men go through andropause. Is it possible to improve our happiness as we get older?
According to a recent survey of 2,000 people 65 and older nearly three-quarters (72%) of people feel younger than they are, with half saying they feel younger than 50-years-old.
The average person stops caring what others think of their age at 43, and over one-third of those polled said that being able to say what you want is one of the best things about getting older. When you stop caring about what other people think a switch is flipped and it points in the direction of happiness.
As older Americans enjoy their golden years, people cited the best parts of aging as having more time to do what they want (64%) and enjoying retirement (60%). Another recent poll showed that 45% of Americans aged 50 and older reported have the best sex of their lives as they’ve aged. The survey found that 35% are surprisingly more intimate than ever before. Really? Yeah really!!
One study found that baby boomers are reinventing what it means to age, and they ignore the outdated stereotypes of older adults. More and more older adults are not letting their age interfere with their quality of life and their individual happiness.
They’re not letting their age interfere with their quality of life because they believe and know their best years of their lives are still ahead. We’ve found and the research supports that happiness truly is “state of mind”. You decide if you are going to be happy about the journey of life or resentful and angry.

Aging America: A Wicked Happy Place

"How happy are you?" That is the big question researchers ask year after year. Not only did researchers find that older people tend to be happier, but that happiness is not something older participants have had all their lives. In other words, as people get older, say starting at age 50, happiness comes to them. We think it’s because we start to appreciate each day more. Even the tough ones.
As the social media and the news continue to warn us about the dangers of an aging America, keep this in mind: An aging America may be the happiest America we have ever seen. Perhaps this is because of the wisdom that comes with age or because older people adjust their expectations in life. Whatever the reason, there is solid evidence that older Americans are truly happier than younger ones.
Happiness Tip: When people ask you how you are. Respond with sincere exuberance. I’m fabulous but I will get better! This makes the person who asked the question smile, and it feeds your brain with positive energy.
From all of us at Wicked Happy (there’s only a couple right now). Have a WICKED HAPPY WEEK!!!

Part of Our Continued Efforts to Spread Wicked Happiness

Part of Our Continued Efforts to Spread Wicked Happiness

July 19, 2022

As a part of our continued efforts to spread Wicked Happiness we thought it would be a great idea to start your week by reading or watching an inspiring story that will help our mission and hopefully give you a great boost to the start of your week. This is our first edition and we hope you enjoy!

Several years ago I was at a speaking event with some of the top motivational and speakers in the world. Guys like Harvey McKay, Michael Gerber, Lewis Howes, Jay Abraham and many others. I also happened to be one of the speakers. The man putting on the event Larry Benet introduced a man that had the most beautiful voice I had heard in person. After the introduction we didn’t see him. We just heard him. Then eventually the room cleared and we all looked back. A man roughly 5 feet tall with obvious abnormalities including missing an arm and what appeared to also be both legs. As he made his way to the stage the entire room was in tears. His voice was inspiring, even angelic. His huge smile just warmed the room. His name is Emanuel Kelly. His enthusiasm and personality exuded warmth and love. Even though I was in tears I was inspired and weirdly happy. I was instantly filled with gratitude. I thought anything I’m dealing with is nothing compared to what Emanuel had to endure. Emanuel was found in a box on the side of the road in war torn Iraq. He was half dead without a name, a passport, or a birthdate. Two soldiers found him and he was brought to an orphanage. His story got some media coverage and he was adopted by his mom Moira Kelly. She loved him immediately. Her loving care included getting Emanuel top medical treatment which included 14 surgical procedures. Emanuel has inspired the world with his story and his voice. He was even on Australian X Factor and his performance has received over a billion views. What he taught me was that one of the keys to happiness and life is to be eternally grateful. We hope you find this story inspiring and have you some happiness.
Have a Wicked Happy Week.
Here is a link to when I first heard Emanuel sing.
